Bloomberg reported on the 22nd (local time) that Elon Musk announced Tesla plans to invest $3 billion to build a research fab on its 'Giga Texas' campus site.
Musk stated this during a conference call held after Tesla's earnings announcement today, adding that it would be capable of producing thousands of wafers per month.
He said, "As far as we understand, Tesla will be responsible for the research fab, and SpaceX will handle the initial part of 'Terafab'."
This is interpreted to mean that a pilot line will be built first to verify the feasibility of the Terafab project, which aims to construct a super-large semiconductor production facility.
He also stated, "We plan to utilize Intel's advanced '14A' process. It's cutting-edge technology, but it's not yet fully complete," adding, "However, by the time Terafab is fully scaled up, 14A should be sufficiently mature or ready for practical deployment, so it seems like the right direction."
Musk did not explicitly state whether Intel's existing factories would be used or if the technology would be adopted through a licensing arrangement.
