Elon Musk announced that Tesla plans to invest $3 billion to build a research fab on Tesla's 'Giga Texas' campus site, Bloomberg reported on the 22nd (local time).
Musk made this statement during a conference call held after Tesla's earnings announcement, adding that it would be capable of producing thousands of wafers per month.
He said, "As far as we understand, Tesla will be responsible for the research fab, and SpaceX will take on the initial part of 'Terafab'."
This is interpreted to mean that a pilot line will be built first to verify the feasibility of the Terafab project, which involves constructing a super-large semiconductor production plant.
He also stated, "We plan to utilize Intel's advanced process, '14A'. It's state-of-the-art technology, but it's not yet fully completed," adding, "However, by the time Terafab is fully expanded, 14A will be sufficiently mature or ready for practical deployment, so it seems to be the right direction."
Musk did not clearly state whether Intel's existing factories would be used or if the technology would be introduced in the form of a license.
