Park Chan-dae's side files a complaint against Jung-bok Yoo couple...Jung-bok Yoo's side "political maneuvering" takes legal action
Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the election race is intensifying as the ruling and opposition parties continue to clash daily over allegations of 'omission of virtual asset declaration' by the spouse of People Power Party's Incheon mayoral candidate Jung-bok Yoo.
It is suspected that candidate Yoo's spouse, Ms. Choi, held 21,000 virtual assets but transferred them to an overseas exchange, omitting them from the candidate's asset declaration. This has now escalated into a series of complaints and accusations.
On the 22nd, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate Chan-dae Park's election campaign committee (Dangchan Camp) filed a complaint with the police against the Yoo couple on charges including violations of the Public Official Election Act and the Public Service Ethics Act, urging a full-scale investigation.
The Democratic Party leadership has also joined in.
On the previous day, Democratic Party floor leader Han Byung-do demanded Yoo's immediate resignation as a candidate during a policy coordination meeting, and Democratic Party lawmakers in the Incheon area disclosed related recordings, calling it "intelligent asset concealment."
In response, candidate Yoo's side counterattacked, calling it "allegations of political maneuvering."
Candidate Yoo's side explained that the virtual assets in question were purchased with the proceeds from the sale of real estate by Yoo's older brother, so they were not considered subject to asset declaration, and that they suffered enormous damage due to the deceptive actions of Mr. A, who claimed to be a virtual asset expert.
To support this, they disclosed original photos of Yoo's older brother's handwritten statement, real estate sales contract, and a bank transfer statement showing 500 million won transferred from Yoo's older brother's account to Yoo's spouse's account in August 2021.
Candidate Yoo's election campaign committee (Jungbok Camp) stated, "We view this matter as allegations of political maneuvering, intertwined with the provision of information by the subject of investigation, biased reporting, and the Democratic Party's political offensive," adding that they would file a complaint against Mr. A, a person related to virtual assets, on charges of fraud, and take legal action, including a lawsuit for damages, against the media outlets that reported on the matter.
The Incheon Provincial Police Agency, which received the complaint from candidate Park's side, plans to designate a department in charge of the investigation after internal review and verify the facts.
However, it is expected to be difficult for the investigation results to be released before the election day, after investigations of the complainant and the accused, verification of related evidence, and legal review.
Accordingly, the debate between the ruling and opposition parties surrounding this issue is expected to continue during the election campaign period.
A police official said, "We plan to review the complaint as quickly as possible and verify the facts."
