Russian President Putin (left) and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met in Russia in June last year
As peace talks with the United States make little progress, Iran is expected to discuss countermeasures with its key ally, Russia.
Kazem Jalali, Iran's Ambassador to Russia, stated in an interview with Iran's ISNA news agency on the 26th that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on the 27th (local time).
Ambassador Jalali explained that Minister Araghchi "will hold in-depth discussions with senior Russian officials regarding the ongoing peace talks, the ceasefire status, and recent changes in the regional situation."
Ambassador Jalali also posted on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Minister Araghchi is meeting President Putin in Russia "as part of Iran's continued diplomatic jihad to advance national interests while facing external threats."
According to AFP, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated today that Minister Araghchi has already departed for Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also confirmed Araghchi's visit to Russia but did not comment on whether he would meet with President Putin.
Russia and Iran have grown closer in recent years, including signing a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty last year.
Russia condemned the United States and Israel for attacking Iran, and there were reports that Russia provided Iran with information on the location and movements of US forces.
Minister Araghchi is expected to explain Iran's negotiation goals and plans to the Russian side and seek their support.
Iran is also actively communicating with neighboring countries.
According to Iranian state media, Minister Araghchi held successive phone calls with the foreign ministers of Egypt, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey on the 25th-26th, and paid a courtesy visit to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said in Oman on the 26th.
As the US and Iran have entered a stalemate without scheduling a second round of negotiations, it is observed that Iran is trying to improve relations with neighboring countries to build favorable public opinion.
According to CNN, Minister Araghchi discussed "diplomacy and ceasefire" and "recent regional developments" with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badri Abdelaty.
In a phone call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, he emphasized the importance of European countries playing a constructive role for a lasting ceasefire.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, informed Minister Araghchi that Qatar is ready to continue its active mediation and dialogue-facilitation role to end the war.
Minister Araghchi explained Iran's diplomatic efforts to end the war and de-escalate tensions to Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
