A man in his 30s who attempted to rob and murder a taxi driver after facing financial difficulties due to a cryptocurrency investment scam has been sentenced to prison.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Byeong-man) announced on the 23rd that it sentenced A (35) to 8 years in prison on charges of attempted robbery and murder.
On October 17 last year, around 1 AM, Mr. A boarded a taxi in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, asked to be taken to a secluded area, then threatened taxi driver Mr. B (70s) with a weapon to demand money. When Mr. B tried to escape, Mr. A stabbed him in the chest and other areas with the weapon, attempting to kill him. He was brought to trial on these charges.
At the time, a resident who heard Mr. B's screams appeared on the scene, preventing the murder, but Mr. B suffered injuries requiring 6 weeks of hospital treatment.
It was investigated that Mr. A had been scammed in a crypto betting investment, leading to severe financial difficulties, including taking out private loans, and he intended to steal money to repay his debts.
The court ruled, "The defendant planned the robbery, and it appears he had an indirect intent to kill. The victim suffered injuries and significant psychological trauma, to the extent that he cannot return to his livelihood as a taxi driver, and no compensation has been made. However, it does not appear that the defendant initially planned robbery and murder," considering these factors.
