Famous American investor Kevin O'Leary has questioned the market dominance of Ethereum (ETH). Citing slow transaction speeds, he asserted that Ethereum would not become the standard across industries and pointed to the potential rise of Solana (SOL) and Avalanche (AVAX).
According to Benzinga on September 21 (local time), O'Leary, famous as a judge on the American reality show 'Shark Tank,' stated on his X (formerly Twitter) that he was confident Ethereum would not become the standard across the 11 industry sectors of the U.S. stock market. He suggested a shift in investment strategy, emphasizing the need to bet on new blockchains with a higher likelihood of adoption.
O'Leary stressed, "Many people think Ethereum is too slow," and "the industry wants much faster processing speeds even with varying transaction volumes." Indeed, according to blockchain data analysis platform Chainspect, Solana processes over 1,262 transactions per second, while Ethereum handles only 22.44 transactions per second.
As an alternative for portfolio diversification, he mentioned Avalanche's technical structure. O'Leary highly praised Avalanche's 'Subnets' multi-chain feature, which allows operating independent validator sets and customized rules while connected to the Avalanche ecosystem. He added, "Many interesting changes are happening," and "as new trends emerge, investors may need to actively rebalance their portfolios."
These remarks deviate from his long-held investment philosophy that holding only Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum could secure 97.5% of the volatility and returns in the crypto market. O'Leary, who has focused investments on crypto infrastructure companies like Circle Internet Group (CRCL), Coinbase Global (COIN), and Robinhood Markets (HOOD), had previously stated that the next big trend in crypto depended on its adoption across various industries within the S&P 500.
As the practical adoption criteria for institutions and industries shift towards processing speed and scalability, the blockchain hegemony competition is heating up again. All eyes are on whether Solana and Avalanche can threaten Ethereum's dominance and lead to a portfolio reshuffling among Wall Street moguls.
