In the global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market, mega-deals exceeding $10 billion have broken all-time records. While top-tier large transactions are driving the market, small and medium-sized deals under $1 billion have not escaped stagnation.
According to BeInCrypto on September 21 (local time), global management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) announced that the total value of global M&A transactions from January to August 2026 reached $2.09 trillion. This is a 15% increase from $1.82 trillion in the same period last year. It is also 11% higher compared to the average of the past 10 years.
The market recovery was led by a few mega-deals. A total of 37 mega-deals worth over $10 billion were recorded. This significantly surpassed the 24 deals in the same period last year and set a new record, even exceeding the 32 deals during the peak boom of 2021.
Conversely, the warmth in the lower market remains cold. The volume of small and medium-sized transactions under $1 billion is below the long-term average. Boston Consulting Group's market sentiment index rose to 83 but did not reach the long-term average baseline of 100.
The virtual asset M&A market also showed the same polarized trend. In the first half of 2026, the disclosed value of virtual asset M&A transactions reached an all-time high of $9.66 billion. However, the number of announced transactions plummeted by 25% year-on-year to 87 cases.
Amid a pronounced concentration of mega-deals, the polarization of the global M&A market has become clear. Global monetary policy trends and companies' financing conditions are considered key variables that will determine the spread of warmth in the small and medium-sized M&A market.
