Strategy (MSTR) has stopped buying Bitcoin for six consecutive weeks, marking the longest hiatus since the 2022 bear market.
According to TheStreet on August 5 (local time), Strategy's last purchase occurred from June 15 to 21. At that time, the company bought 520 BTC at an average price of $67,068 per Bitcoin (BTC). There have been no further purchases for the subsequent six weeks. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on August 3, its holdings stand at 842,138 BTC.
Strategy continued large-scale purchases until the first half of this year. Recently, it has been focusing more on securing cash than making additional purchases. As of August 2, its dollar reserves have increased to $4 billion. With second-quarter preferred stock dividend obligations significantly exceeding operating income, the company found itself in a situation where it had to manage cash expenditures first.
Along with the halt in purchases, Bitcoin sales also continued. Strategy sold approximately 5,226 BTC in three separate transactions this year through its monetization program. The proceeds from the sales amounted to approximately $321 million. The selling price was lower than the company's average purchase price of approximately $75,419. TheStreet reported that losses were incurred on each sale to cover preferred stock dividends and related obligations.
A similar gap in purchases occurred during the 2022 bear market. Strategy subsequently resumed Bitcoin purchases. Bitcoin reached an all-time high of approximately $126,000 in October 2025. However, there is no evidence that the trend at that time will repeat itself. This halt in purchases is focused on liquidity management rather than a withdrawal from its Bitcoin strategy.
Financial commentator Peter Schiff's prediction of deteriorating Bitcoin returns for Strategy is also becoming a reality. The company's cumulative quarterly Bitcoin return and Bitcoin profit have turned negative. However, 15 analysts have maintained a 'strong buy' rating for Strategy, with an average price target of $257.5. The timing of resuming purchases depends on Strategy's liquidity and preferred stock dividend burden.
