An unidentified wallet permanently locked over $8.2 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) by sending 107.1302 BTC to a burn address, increasing the wallet's cumulative holdings to 807.238 BTC.
According to crypto media outlet Bitcoin.com on May 26 (local time), Sani, founder of Timechainindex.com, detected a transaction on May 25 where a wallet owner sent 107.1302 BTC to a Bitcoin burn address. The value of this amount was estimated to be over $8.2 million.
A burn address is a public cryptographic destination with no known private key. The Bitcoin network accepts transactions if they are in a mathematically valid destination format, but the possibility of finding the private key for such an address is virtually nonexistent. Therefore, Bitcoin sent to a burn address is permanently inaccessible and cannot be used again.
Sani stated via X (formerly Twitter) that “someone broadcast 5 transactions totaling 107 BTC to Bitcoin burn address 1111111111111111111114oLvT2.” Trezor reacted to Sani’s post with an Elmo meme in front of flames, and Blockstream founder Adam Back asked, “Is it an accidental quantum computing bounty?”
This transaction increased the balance of the burn wallet to 807.238 BTC, with its value estimated at $62.15 million. This wallet holds 385,811 confirmed unspent transactions and has never sent a single satoshi externally since its creation on August 10, 2010.
Bitcoin.com reported that there have been past instances of Bitcoin burning. In January 2014, the Counterparty project encouraged participants to send Bitcoin to a burn address, and 2,131.11 BTC were burned over 20 days. In return, the protocol automatically distributed 2.6 million XCP tokens without an initial coin offering or founder allocation.
The reason for this 107.1302 BTC transfer has not yet been confirmed. The transaction is not linked to any identity, nor does it show a clear connection to a protocol launch, a proof-of-work burn mechanism, or any known project. Bitcoin.com stated that all 807.238 BTC currently in this wallet are permanently locked, and the address will never be able to send out a single satoshi in the future.
