A lawsuit has been filed in New York, USA, claiming ownership of approximately 39,069 dormant BTC wallet addresses. The plaintiffs argue that these BTC wallets, which have shown no activity for a long period, constitute 'abandoned property' under New York's lost property law. According to Cointelegraph, the plaintiffs reported these wallets to the New York Police Department (NYPD) after discovering them, asserting that their long-term inactivity allows them to be treated similarly to dormant accounts and lost assets in traditional finance. The lawsuit includes addresses believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto and addresses related to the Mt. Gox hacker, with the total volume held by these addresses estimated at approximately 3.7 million BTC. However, market analysis suggests that the actual enforceability is low, given that BTC cannot be accessed without private keys.
