Businesses "Received First Refund Installment"... Trump "Will Fight Back"
It has been confirmed that the United States began refunding tariffs that were ruled illegal starting on the 12th (local time).
CNBC reported that the first installment of refunds began to be paid to businesses almost three months after the Donald Trump administration collected tariffs that were later ruled illegal by the Federal Supreme Court.
Matt Field, CEO of retailer Oshkosh, confirmed to CNBC that while he could not confirm the total refund amount, "we have started receiving refunds for the initial portion of our application."
Jay Foreman, CEO of toy company Basic Fun, also stated in a press release that they have received 5% of the total applied amount so far, adding, "We will use the refunds to support cash flow this year and invest in our team."
Previously, global logistics companies UPS, FedEx, and DHL had announced that they had initiated the tariff refund application process on behalf of their customers.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated in court filings that as of the morning of the 11th, it expects to pay $35.46 billion (approximately 52.75 trillion Korean Won) in refunds for 8.3 million import shipments.
This tariff refund follows the Federal Supreme Court's ruling in February to invalidate President Trump's tariff imposition measures.
In an interview with WABC radio on this day, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the tariff refund situation, calling it "crazy" and saying, "We were collecting enormous amounts of money from people, from countries, from companies that hated us."
He continued, "Theoretically, we should return the tariffs," but added, "We will fight back against it."
