Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano (ADA), and Hugo Philion, CEO of Flare Networks, engaged in a public war of words. When Philion criticized Cardano's DeFi performance, Hoskinson retorted that Flare was trying to attract attention by using Cardano's name.
U.Today reported on May 6 that Hoskinson and Philion exchanged strong arguments on X (formerly Twitter). Philion claimed that Flare had surpassed Cardano in key DeFi metrics, despite starting six years later than Cardano. He criticized that Cardano, launched in 2017, attempted to imitate Flare's strategy but was failing, and specifically stated that Cardano would fall behind in the trusted execution environment sector as well.
Philion said, "Cardano started much earlier than Flare and once held massive financial assets, but its overall DeFi metrics are much lower than Flare's." He further argued that Cardano would not capture Bitcoin (BTC) and stated that Flare would gain an advantage by building an integrated DeFi layer for bridge assets like FXRP, FBTC, and FXLM, as well as real-world assets and stablecoins.
Hoskinson dismissed Philion's claims as an old marketing tactic aimed at gaining attention. Hoskinson said, "Attacking Cardano to gain attention and media exposure was only effective in 2022." He then sarcastically added, "You need to update your marketing strategy. Why don't you try TikTok reaction videos instead?"
Hours later, Philion refuted that his post was an attack. He claimed that he merely cited objective on-chain data from DeFi Llama. He then continued with taunting remarks, again targeting Cardano's development speed, suggesting he could show Hoskinson Flare's future roadmap in advance.
Philion said, "It wasn't an attack. It was just DeFi Llama's numbers," and "If I read between the lines of your message, does it mean that others attacked Cardano in 2022 too, and yet practically nothing has changed?" He then added, "Would you like to get an advance copy of our 2027 strategy and try to copy that too?"
The dispute focused more on the public spat between the two leaders rather than a technical competition between Cardano and Flare. Philion emphasized Flare's superiority in DeFi metrics and roadmap, while Hoskinson characterized remarks targeting Cardano as attention-seeking attacks.
