X (formerly Twitter) users are complaining of fatigue from spam and scam advertisements overwhelming their timelines and have begun blocking a large number of key cryptocurrency-related keywords.
According to BeInCrypto, a cryptocurrency-specialized media outlet, on May 1 (local time), a recent survey revealed that the number one most blocked word by users on social media platform X was NFT. 25.2% of respondents added the word to their block list to avoid seeing NFT-related posts. Airdrop followed with a block rate of 18.4%.
The main reason users block cryptocurrency-related terms is the indiscriminate spam posts from bot accounts. As fraudulent activities, such as promoting specific projects or demanding personal information under the guise of free giveaways, became rampant, users activated their defense mechanisms. Major asset names like Cryptocurrency (13.1%), Bitcoin (BTC) (9.4%), and Ethereum (ETH) (8.1%) also made it onto the top block list.
In addition to cryptocurrencies, politics (7.6%) and Elon Musk (6.2%) were also counted as major blocked keywords. Many users are wary of biased information about specific individuals or political parties dominating their timelines. Especially as the volatility of the cryptocurrency market increases, related spam tends to surge, leading to users strengthening their block settings.
It is pointed out that solving the spam and bot problem is essential for the healthy growth of the cryptocurrency community within social media. Indiscriminate advertisements instill a negative perception among potential investors and erode overall market trust. The introduction of robust platform-level filtering systems and community clean-up efforts are urgently needed.
